The Spanish Ford factory has revealed what its weapons are to try to secure the award of the new models of electric cars for which it competes with the German factory in Saarlouis and on which the future of the Valencian plant, which has 6,200 workers, depends. beyond 2030.
The agreement between the majority union UGT and the company contemplates that during the next four years wages will be decoupled from the CPI and an accumulated rise of 7,000 euros will be contemplated until 2025, which will not be consolidated.
In exchange, the workforce will increase the working day by 15 minutes a day from 2025 and also access greater flexibility measures , such as applying industrial shifts without additional costs or working up to 8 or 10 Saturdays a year depending on the production needs of the company. car factory. All this is conditional on Ford assigning the workload of new electric models to Almussafes from 2025 , a decision that the manufacturer’s global management in the United States must make in the coming months.
As UGT sources explained after a meeting with the management of the plant and the rest of the unions of the works council of the Valencian factory, the agreement is based on containment and not on the salary freeze , although they recognize that it may mean a loss of purchasing power for workers in these years. The current agreement sets an annual rise in the CPI plus 0.5%.
If Ford headquarters finally chooses the Valencian plant, the salary increase would be 1,000 euros this year, 1,500 euros in 2023, 2,000 euros in 2024 and 2,500 euros in 2025, which would not be consolidated in the salary tables. In 2026 the rise according to the IPC would recover , according to UGT.
Work time and flexibility
In terms of flexibility in working time, another of the brand’s demands, the agreement, in addition to increasing the daily working hours in each shift by fifteen minutes, provides for more facilities to apply industrial working hours and working Saturdays
As for industrial days, which are currently 4 days a year of vacation that can be exchanged for work depending on demand, they will continue to be consumed before an ERTE and the existing bonus will be waived.
In addition, if the needs of the demand demanded it, they could work up to 8 Saturdays per year with a day of vacation in exchange and an extra flexibility of about 100 euros in the standard case of a production operator. Also contemplated are 10 additional annual Saturdays that would be charged as overtime.
Another novelty is the possibility of organizing a 4-hour mini-night shift to meet peak demand, which would be covered with new hires and volunteers, which could be extended to full time if necessary. In the latter case, the 15-minute extension of the day would disappear.
The German threat
The initial agreement has to be endorsed by the factory staff and UGT has asked for support from the rest of the unions, who have not seen favorably the rupture of the union front. The scope of the agreement reached by Saarlouis in its proposal also remains to be seen , since although the conditions have not been disclosed, in principle the German plant ensures that its conditions include the entire Ford workforce in Germany. If the workers at its facilities in Cologne are added, which has already ensured the production of new electric cars, it represents nearly 20,000 jobs.
